Terms of Use
These are the terms for using BetterLang. They are short on purpose: you should be able to read all of them.
They were written by the person who builds BetterLang, not by a lawyer.
Version 2026-09-27 · in effect from 27 September 2026
Who you are agreeing with
BetterLang is operated by Mertcan Merkit, an individual, from Belgium. Contact: [email protected]. By creating an account or using BetterLang you accept these terms and the Privacy Policy. You need to be at least 16.
Your account
Keep your password to yourself and keep it strong. Anything done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else has got in.
You can stop at any time. You can delete your account, and doing so removes your data as described there.
What you import stays yours
The texts, transcripts and Cards you put into BetterLang are yours. Nothing here transfers ownership. BetterLang stores and processes them only in order to run the product for you — to show them in the reader, to translate what you click, to schedule your Practice.
You are responsible for having the right to import what you import. Don't upload things you have no right to use.
What not to do
- Don't break the law with it, and don't use it to infringe someone else's rights.
- Don't try to get at other people's accounts or data.
- Don't attack, overload, or probe the service, and don't work around its rate limits or quotas.
- Don't resell BetterLang, or run it as a service for other people.
- Don't bulk-extract other people's shared content or the public pages.
- Don't use the YouTube parts in ways YouTube's own terms forbid — those terms apply to you as well when you watch or import from YouTube.
Rights holders
If something published on BetterLang infringes your rights, use the content removal form or write to [email protected]. Requests are acted on; repeated infringement ends an account.
What is not promised
BetterLang is provided as it is. There is no promise that it will always be available, that it will be free of faults, or that any particular feature will keep existing. It is run by one person.
No learning outcome is promised. BetterLang will not make you fluent, and it does not award or certify any language level. What you get out of it depends on what you put in.
AI and machine translation can be wrong. Explanations, translations and writing feedback are generated by software and are not checked by a person. Don't rely on them for anything that matters.
Third-party content. Videos, transcripts, articles and lyrics reached through BetterLang belong to whoever made them. BetterLang does not vouch for them and is not responsible for them.
There are currently no backups of the database. Keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose — Words → Export Cards and Stats → Download CSV are there for that.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, Mertcan Merkit is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost data, or for loss of profit or opportunity arising from your use of BetterLang. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
If you are a consumer, you keep every right your own country's consumer law gives you. Nothing here takes any of those away.
Ending it
You can delete your account whenever you like. An account may be suspended or closed if these terms are broken — in particular for repeated rights infringement or for attacking the service. If that happens for a reason that turns out to be wrong, write to [email protected].
Changes
These terms can change. When they change in a way that matters, the version at the top changes and the new version applies from the date shown. Continuing to use BetterLang after that means the new version applies to you.
There is no paid plan yet, so there is nothing here about payment, renewal or refunds. When there is, this page will gain a section for it before anyone is charged anything.
Law and where disputes go
These terms are governed by Belgian law, and the courts of Belgium have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and you may also bring proceedings there.
