Deleting your account
How to delete your BetterLang account, what disappears when you do, and the few things that do not. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.
Version 2026-09-27 · in effect from 27 September 2026
How to delete it
- Open Settings → Profile — in the app, on the web, or on your phone.
- Choose Delete my account.
- Enter your password and type DELETE to confirm.
It happens straight away. There is no waiting period, no confirmation email, and no way to undo it.
Export first if you want to keep anything. Once it is gone it is gone. Words → Export Cards saves your Cards and Stats → Download CSV saves your Practice history. Neither export includes the full text of the Content you imported, so save anything you typed or pasted that you would miss.
If you cannot sign in
Write to support@betterlang.app from the email address on the account and ask for it to be deleted. If you cannot write from that address, say which address the account uses and enough about it to show it is yours. You will get a reply confirming when it is done.
What is deleted
- Your account: name, email address and password.
- Every way of signing in: sessions, personal API tokens and any password-reset link.
- Everything you made: the Content you imported and its text, your Cards with their notes and translations, your Practice and Audio Drill history, folders, imports, reading positions, settings and language profile.
- Your private translation and AI Explain caches.
- Your usage counters and your sign-in sessions, which hold IP addresses and user-agent strings.
- Anything you had deleted but not yet purged — hidden Cards and Content go too.
- Your account's email address, if you also left it on a public page to save words. A different address left there is not reached by this — write to support@betterlang.app and it will be removed.
- Anything you shared publicly: the public copy is removed, with its text.
Signing in on your phone or in the browser extension stops working at once, because the tokens they hold are revoked with everything else.
What is kept, and why
- A record that a share existed — its dates, its status, the moderation decision, and the identifiers a takedown block matches on. The shared text, the IP address, the user-agent string and the device identifier are all wiped from it. This is what stops a removed item quietly coming back.
- Takedown requests from rights holders — those are somebody else's record of a complaint, not your data, so they stay. Only the link to whoever decided them is removed.
- Text already sent to a translation or AI provider — Google and OpenRouter received it at the time and keep it under their own rules. Deleting your account here cannot reach it.
- Server logs at the hosting provider, which are kept briefly and do not contain the text of what you imported or translated.
There are currently no database backups, so a deletion has no second copy to chase.
